Night Shyamalan's Signs, where she experienced the horrors of being Mel Gibson's on-screen daughter. By far her most acclaimed role was in the film Little Miss Sunshine, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress (due to the fact that child actors are never seen as main actors for whatever reason). The recent announcement that she would play Helen Keller in a Broadway revival of The Miracle Worker caused some controversy in that a deaf or blind actress was not considered for the role.
